Washington, D.C. — As a federal government shutdown over the holidays looms, Jobs With Justice National Policy Director Adam Shah issued the following statement:
“Elon Musk–the wealthiest man in the world–is getting the first returns off the huge investment he made to put Donald Trump back in the White House. He and Trump are demanding that Congress clear the way for a massive tax cut for billionaires like them by suspending the debt ceiling, and they are willing to hold every civil servant and the people who rely on them for safe workplaces, a fair day’s pay, breathable air, and drinkable water hostage to do it.
“Musk and Trump will use every lever at their disposal to transfer power up from the people to the billionaires, even if it means cutting off working people’s salaries right before the holidays.
“The impact of a shutdown is felt beyond federal workers. Just this week, the Department of Labor issued guidance extending eligibility for ‘dislocated worker grants’ to workers who’ve been fired for asserting their democratic rights on-the-job. A shutdown would delay the release of those funds, demonstrating that the impacts of a government shutdown are not limited to Washington, D.C.”
