Washington, D.C. – Following the Senate’s confirmation of Tom Perez as the U.S. Secretary of Labor, Sarita Gupta, executive director of Jobs with Justice and American Rights at Work, and co-director of the Caring Across Generations campaign, issued the following statement:

“We’re pleased that the Senate has confirmed Tom Perez — a strong advocate for working families, particularly low-wage, and immigrant workers – as our nation’s top labor official.

“We look forward to working with the Secretary to ensure that the basic rights and safeguards of labor law are extended to all people in this country and modernized to reflect the rapidly shifting nature of work .As such, Secretary Perez should immediately prioritize implementing the proposed rule extending minimum wage, overtime and other FLSA rights to the 2.5 million caregivers working without these critical labor protections in the United States.

“We trust Tom Perez will continue to stand up for working people, putting their interests at the top of his Department’s agenda.”
