POWER: Protect Our Workers from Exploitation & Retaliation

The POWER Campaign seeks to eliminate the threat of ICE in worker organizing efforts. It also aims to expand protections for worker leaders who stand up to unscrupulous employers. In January 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced a process to streamline and expedite deferred action requests of immigrant workers involved in labor agency investigations and enforcement. Although this process is a much-needed tool to protect the labor rights of immigrant workers, it does not go far enough. This process provides only temporary protection, with no path to permanent status, and can be rescinded via executive decision. The POWER Act is the next step to deliver definitive, reliable protection and ensure that our labor laws are upheld consistently.

Immigrant workers who are under the constant threat of deportation are forced to accept diminished working conditions. This, in turn, undermines wages and working conditions for all workers. We all stand to lose when immigrant workers are exploited, as wages and conditions are dragged down across the board.
