Jobs With Justice Statement on President-Elect Donald Trump Nominating Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer for Labor Secretary

Washington, D.C.— Following President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer for Secretary of Labor, Erica Smiley, Executive Director of Jobs With Justice, one of the nation’s leading organizations focused on labor and workers’ rights, issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump has nominated Rep. Chavez-DeRemer to be Secretary of Labor, a critical position that oversees the department that is supposed to stand with and for working people. While Chavez-DeRemer has built a record of supporting workers’ right to organize, Trump and his cronies have made it clear they are no friend to workers. Through Project 2025 and other key appointments, we see their true aim is to dismantle key worker protections, further cut taxes for billionaires, and manipulate rules against working families.

To President-elect Trump: You may think we will rest easy following Rep. Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination, but make no mistake, we will continue to hold you and your administration accountable when you put billionaires, bad bosses, and corporations ahead of working people. If confirmed, we will aggressively hold Chavez-DeRemer accountable to her promises to working people.

If Donald Trump thinks he can fool us with a pro-worker Labor Secretary nominee while still planning to dismantle the structures meant to protect workers’ freedom to organize, unionize, and adjudicate cases against bad employers, he is wrong. We are ready to fight for workers’ basic rights and dignity, and are committed to ensuring democracy in the workplace, at the ballot boxes, and in our communities.”
